Law of Moses VS Law of Christ

The Law of Moses and the Law of Christ have been given at different times through Christ, but had different purposes.

The Israelites were wandering through the wilderness for forty years. It was a long journey and led them in circles, both literally and spiritually. At one point, God gave Moses what we call "the higher law", but they were not ready for it. Because of their disobedience, they were given a lesser law called the Law of Moses. It was a series of tedious tasks and rules for them to follow and they were direct instructions on day-to-day activities. It was the idea of going from behavior to principle because if you practice the endless actions, you will eventually "get" the principles trying to be taught. Underlying all these rules were wonderful doctrines, the biggest ones being eternal covenants and the law of consecration.

On the other hand, we have what is called the Law of Christ. It is the opposite effect of the Law of Moses. Instead of a direct commandment, a principle is given. Often Christ taught these principles in parables while in His mortal ministry. In our lives, we are given these principles which can guide our behavior--behavior in harmony with God's teachings.

Nowadays, revelation and guidance in the church comes in forms of both "Law of Moses" and "Law of Christ" commandments. Take for instance caffeine. Although the Lord told us of many substances to avoid specifically, caffeine was not mentioned. This has long since been a debatable topic in the church. Why? Because people just want it told to them. But instead, God has given us a "Law of Christ", meaning we were given the law of the Word of Wisdom, and are then governed by that principle. Our behavior regarding caffeine comes from that principle.

On the other hand, Gordon B. Hinckley told all young women that one pair of earrings are sufficient enough. Another example is gambling, pornography, and abuse. These are principles intended to guide our behavior. It does not say "be nice", but do not look at degrading images or do not gamble. Often, and sadly, both "Law of Moses" and "Law of Christ" commandments are rationalized by church members. But no matter what excuses are made, the laws that God gives us are for our benefit. Instead of trying to find ways around them, use them as catalysts to let yourself grow exponentially to a higher spiritual level.
